The island covers about 3.9 hectares and features a shallow lagoon separating it from the shore, accessible only by boat during high tide. During the Crusades, there were conflicting accounts about the establishment of a castle on the island. Some sources suggest Crusader's presence, while others contest this. Later, in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was believed to have been fortified by the Ayyubids. It was inhabited by Muslims and Christian captives since the 14th century who primarily engaged in fishing activities.
