The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has initiated a significant project to study and document the granite blocks comprising the outer casing of the Pyramid of Menkaure. The future endeavor is led by a joint Egyptian-Japanese archaeological mission headed by Dr. Mostafa Waziri and Dr. Yoshimura Sakoguchi which aims to restore the pyramid to its former glory, aligning it with ancient depictions and inscriptions. Out of the 16 granite blocks, only seven remain today, so the other nine layers are set to be added soon. It is described in the media as a "Project of the Century" by Waziri, the restoration effort is considered crucial, coinciding with the imminent opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum which is set in 2024. The three-year project involves various tasks such as drawing, photogrammetry, documentation, laser scanning, and the reassembly of the granite blocks. Waziri emphasized the global significance of the restoration, calling it a "Gift from Egypt to the World in the 21st Century" enabling the first complete viewing of the pyramid in modern times.
Criticism has emerged on social media, with some expressing concerns about violating international principles on renovations. The issue of heritage preservation in Egypt, which is heavily reliant on tourism, often sparks heated debates, as seen in recent controversies over the destruction of historic areas in the major cities of Cairo, Alexandria, Aswan, and Luxor.
